The procedure for collection of Cup of Carbon data requires only a straight-sided cylindrical ceramic mug with a white interior (volume around 300 ml and internal height of 8–9 cm) to hold the water sample, a downloadable sheet is required for the image background. For best results, place the sheet on a hard surface such as a clipboard. The mug should be filled as close to the brim as possible with a water sample and placed centrally on the background paper. A landscape or portrait photograph should be taken of the mug from a height that captures the entire A4 sheet with a small margin on all sides, ideally with the edges of the paper parallel to the edges of the image, and with the cup central to the image. If possible, the image should be taken in daylight but not in full sunlight, with the whole image area in shade (under cloud or shaded by a large object) to minimise reflections and glare from the sun on the water surface and on the laminated white paper background.
Spatial information is derived from the image metadata so it is important to ensure your phone (or camera) has the location feature enabled before you take the image. The photo should be taken close to the water source. However, it does not matter where you upload the image. For example if there is no mobile signal when you take the image, or if you want to take multiple samples from different parts of the peatland restoration site and subsequently upload each image one-by-one from the final or alternate location, the location of each sample will be unaffected.
